Jessica Weiner Senior Project Day 3

I didn’t mention in the last post what exactly I was doing. I am participating and evaluating group exercise fitness instructors at the Jewish Community Center based on their actions, the class’s response, and how effective their workouts are. Additionally, I’m interviewing them and making an online section about each of the instructors. Today was my third day of senior project because I had to miss it yesterday due to AP exams. Thus far, I have been going to three or four classes per day, normally taking two in the morning, back to back, then speaking with my sponsor and going over various work needed to be done, and after that, taking yet another class. My sponsor, Kim, is having me participate in several classes this week where I make mental notes about instructors, but next week is when I will begin to write down my evaluations as well as start to interview each teacher. Today, I only took three group exercise classes today, a step interval class, a power sculpt class, and a bosu sculpt class.
In comparison to the 20/20/20 class I took the other day which also used a step, this class was much easier to follow the actual moves. However, it was a much harder workout than the 20/20/20 class. The intervals were rather basic and mainly focused on one’s thighs and gluts. Therefore there were many “knee up” moves, lunges, and squats.
The power sculpt class directly followed the step interval class and by the end, I was exhausted. I think, without knowing it, the instructors were ganging up on me and whoever else took both classes, because they both concentrated on working the lower body. In the power sculpt class, we did a lot of multi-tasking moves. For instance, we did bicep curls while lunging or focused on triceps while squatting; there never seemed to be a break.
The last class I did was a bosu sculpt class. A bosu ball is half an exercise ball and is normally blue. It is traditionally used to improve balance and proprioception, a way in which your body reacts to different forces and attempts to keep all your muscles and joints in the right positions. The class itself wasn’t too difficult, but yet again, there were several lunges and squats involved with a lot of upper body and core moves as well.

  1. Jessie, that sounds intense! But really interesting. You seem you like you're really helping out the Ronald McDonald house and getting to know the patients well. I guess one of the biggest things that you said that caught my eye was the part about the immuno room where you have to wash your hands all the time. It seems like that would be so hard for a patient, especially a child, but also hard for a parent to watch. It's extremely sad, in a way. Hope everything continues to go well! Keep those legs moving!
